These changes, described in Section 6 of the company’s proposal, place a limit on the amount of money Kroger is required to pay to fund your health care benefits. Neutral third-party experts have made it clear that this cap is inadequate to fund your benefits, but despite those facts, the company is insisting on the cap anyway.
According to the experts, as early as 14 months from now, this cap could be exceeded and several things could happen, including:
- Your weekly contributions will increase
- Your health care coverage will be slashed, with less coverage, higher deductibles, out of pockets, and copays, and increased prescription drug costs.
- Your eligibility for benefits will change making you no longer eligible for health care
Any or all three of these outcomes are possible under Kroger’s proposal. Furthermore, you would never have an opportunity to vote on these changes; they would be mandated by Kroger’s current proposal. This is simply unacceptable.
For example, if costs exceed the cap being proposed by Kroger, then the rules could change so only employees averaging 30+ hours per week are eligible for health care. Anyone working fewer hours per week would lose their coverage. Or your weekly costs for health care could increase by any amount without asking your permission. Your prescription drug costs could also increase. Or benefits could simply be cut so certain doctors or medical procedures are no longer covered by your insurance. Or all of the above!
