LANDOVER, Md. (July 25, 2024) – For nearly two years our coalition has been standing up and loudly proclaiming what a bad idea this proposed Kroger and Albertsons mega-merger would be because of the harm it would cause to workers, shoppers, and communities. Unfortunately, on many occasions, the employers have acted as if this merger were already a done deal. The reality is that it is not a done deal at all. In fact, there are three separate lawsuits in process to block it.
The lawsuit filed by the Colorado Attorney General led to a ruling today from a Colorado court to temporarily halt the proposed mega-merger and helps to clarify this point – the merger is by no means a done deal. That case is now scheduled to be heard starting on September 30th.
In addition, there is the Federal Trade Commission’s case challenging the merger, joined by the states Attorneys General of AZ, CA, DC, IL, MD, NV, NM, OR and WY which is scheduled to be heard starting on August 26 in federal court in Oregon. A third case by the Washington State Attorney General is scheduled to be heard starting on September 16 in Washington state.
