HYATTSVILLE, Md. (December 13, 2024) – Today, workers at Story cannabis dispensary in Hyattsville, Md. announced they voted to unionize with United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 400 Union.
They are joined by workers at the Story location in Mechanicsville, Md. who unionized with UFCW Local 400 last year and are currently negotiating their first union contract.
“Joining together in a union is the best way for us to ensure Story provides fair wages we can live on and benefits we can depend on,” said Oluwademilade “Demi” Adewunmi who has worked at the Hyattsville dispensary for nine months. “We are proud to join Story workers across the country who are unionizing and we look forward to coming together to negotiate a strong union contract that respects and rewards our hard work.”
The workers filed for a union election through the National Labor Relations Board in November after a majority of eligible employees signed authorization cards in support of unionizing. Voting took place in the shop on Wednesday and workers voted 12–2 in favor of unionizing. The union covers 19 employees at the Hyattsville dispensary located at 2486 Chillum Rd.
The staff are among several Maryland cannabis dispensaries that have recently unionized, including: the Apothecarium locations in Burtonsville and Cumberland; Sweetspot in Olney; Green Goods in Rockville; Potomac Holistics in Rockville; Zen Leaf locations in Germantown and Towson; PharmaCann Verilife Dispensary in Westminster; and MaryMed, LLC in Hurlock, among others.
